Wildflowers decorate miles and miles of gorgeous trails in the Columbia River Gorge. The river canyon is a major transportation route through the Cascade Mountain Range stretching 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep. The North canyon walls reside in Washington State and the South canyon walls in Oregon. This Northwestern destination has the highest concentration of waterfalls in the region. A central focal point of the Gorge is Multnomah Falls (shown left), 30 miles East of Downtown Portland. The actual gorge begins 20 miles East of Portland and extends past The Dalles, to 100 miles East of Portland. Since 1986, the Gorge has been designated a National Scenic Area. This designation doesn't create a wilderness or park, but instead allows for rural and scenic trails to be preserved in all of their natural beauty while developing within urban areas.
Activities: Hiking, mountain biking, windsurfing, fishing, boating of all types, wildlife watching, birding, wildflower viewing, photography, picnicking, rock climbing. These are just a few of the many attractions waiting along the beautiful Columbia River Gorge.
