The first modern winery in Colorado opened in the late 1960s. Since then, many other wineries have opened their doors in the Grand Valley Wine Country. To date, there are nearly a dozen and the region has won many medals for its fine wine. The area's warm days and cool nights, moderate winters and arid soil are ideal for growing a variety of grapes producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot wines. This region is also becoming known for their flavorful fruit wines and dessert wines.
Wine-related activities are offered primarily in Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Events include tastings and Wine & Art Fests. The Colorado Mountain Winefest is mid-September annually.
Whether you prefer to kayak raging rivers, mountain bike, climb rock faces, or go 4-wheeling, Grand Valley Wine Country offers many outdoor activities. The Grand Valley also has active dinosaur digs. Other places to visit in the area include the Dinosaur Museum, Colorado National Monument, and the Grand Mesa.
The Grand Valley Wine Country is near Clifton, Grand Junction, and Palisade, Colorado.
