Perhaps it's the midwestern hospitality or romantic covered bridges that make Madison County, Iowa an intriguing destination. Not only was John Wayne born in the central little town of Winterset, but also the New York Times best-selling Robert James Waller novel, The Bridges of Madison County, mark another reason this quaint county near Des Moines is recognized by many. Six of 19 original covered bridges remain listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are "Delicious Apple" trees that find a home alongside the charming bridges. The brand of apples was discovered at the 1893 Missouri State Fair when a juidge proclaimed the apple was "delicious" after just one bite.
A 30-year-old festivity compliments the nationally recognized bridges and apple orchards -- the Covered Bridge Festival takes place the 2nd full weekend in October when orange and red leaves decorate the scene. The celebration features old-time craft demonstrations by local artisans, an antique vehicle parade, tours of the landmark bridges, along with a diverse selection of food, music and entertainment.
Activities: Take a driving tour to view the bridges; visit John Wayne's birthplace home and the Winterset Art Center; see the 1926 Clark's Tower honoring the county's first pioneer families; enjoy the Kaser-Bevington House and Historical Complex with log cabin, post office, 1871 train depot, 1856 Victorian mansion and stone barn, and more. In nearby Des Moines, sights and activities include the Des Moines Art Center, Science Center of Iowa, Drake University, Iowa State Capital, many state, city, and county parks and the Adventureland Amusement Park.
