The Traverse City area in the northwest portion of Michigan's lower pennisula, has been ranked 12th in the World by Golf Digest and among the top 6 golf destinations in the country by Golf Magazine. Although the winters cut into the golfing season and there is not a huge abundance of courses, it is the glorious course designs by the greats Doak, Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, and Weiskopf, set among the water, hills and woods of the picturesque area near the upper Lake Michigan coast. You can enjoy a variety of challenges and layouts among the area's 15 premier courses.
For additional summertime activities, visit the beaches and dunes of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore west of Traverse City on Lake Michigan. There are also 15 wineries in the area, most of which have visiting times for the public, and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians operates two different casinos nearby.
