The Yakima Valley, Tri-Cities (Kennewick, Pasco, Richland), and Walla Walla, Washington State boast 300 days of sunshine each year. These long summer days produce some of the nation’s best red wines, including Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, in their almost 100 wineries. Canoe Ridge lies just above the Crow Butte State Park on the Columbia River. This Ridge produces grapes for Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. The Lower Snake River, East of Pasco, Washington, one of the Tri-Cities, has mild climate and irrigations perfect for creating Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.
Special weekend and holiday activities that combine good food and wine begin early. In mid-February is Red Wine & Chocolate. May has the fine wine auction and dinner in Pasco and Walla Walla Valley hosts the Balloon Stampede. There are numerous other opportunities to taste local wines.
The Yakima Valley, Tri-Cities, and Walla Walla region offers distinct seasons. These cyclic changes present Spring and Autumn festivals, rodeos in the Summer, and snow-related sporting opportunities in the Winter. All year activities include listening to history lectures, visiting art museums, local theatre, the Yakama Nation Legends Casino, or Bennington Lake. For the nature lover in us all, this part of Washington State has several parks including Sacagawea Heritage Trail, the Hanford Reach National Monument, the Lewis and Clark Trail State Park, and wildlife refuge sites.
Yakima Valley is approximately 2 – 3 hours driving East of Seattle, Washington, over the Cascade Mountains. The Tri-Cities (Kennewick, Pasco, Richland) are Southeast of the Yakima Valley. The Walla Walla region is East of the Tri-Cities.
